After all the empires rise and fall, the Son of Man arrives with the clouds of heaven to receive His eternal kingdom. This is our hope: Jesus wins. Not maybe. Not eventually. Definitively. Every knee will bow—not because people choose to, but because His authority will be undeniable. The question isn't whether Jesus is King; it's whether you've surrendered to Him now, while grace is still available. One day, confession will be compulsory. Today, it's an invitation. The kingdoms of this world are temporary, brutal, and destined for destruction. But Christ's kingdom has no end. When you're tempted to compromise with worldly systems, remember what's coming. When faithfulness feels costly, remember who's returning. The Son of Man is coming with the clouds, and every sacrifice made for Him will be worth it.

Read the Context (Further Reading: Philippians 2:9-11)
Revelation 1
1The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
4John,
To the seven churches in the province of Asia:
Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits a before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.
7“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” b
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;
and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” c
So shall it be! Amen.
8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
9I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”
12I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, d dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
17When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
19“Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels e of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
Footnotes:
a 4 That is, the sevenfold Spirit
b 7 Daniel 7:13
c 7 Zech. 12:10
d 13 See Daniel 7:13.
e 20 Or messengers

Make the Connection:

What does this show me about God’s character?

What does God want me to believe or do?

Am I willing to follow God in this way?

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? Kings sit when they're in control. God isn’t described as standing, because He never loses control. This image should steady every anxious heart. The world shakes, evil advances, nations crumble—but heaven is calm. God isn't pacing, panicking, or searching for solutions. He's enthroned in perfect peace because the outcome has never been in question. When you feel overwhelmed by the chaos around you, remember: your King is seated. His posture reflects His position. Nothing catches Him off guard. No development surprises Him. No enemy threatens His reign. The same throne Daniel saw remains occupied today. Let this truth anchor your soul when everything else seems unstable. Your circumstances may be chaotic, but your God is composed, confident, and completely sovereign.

Read the Context
Revelation 4 NIV
1After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits a of God. 6Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
“ ‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’ b
who was, and is, and is to come.”
9Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. Deception works slowly, subtly, preparing hearts long before the deceiver arrives. The greatest danger facing believers isn't persecution—it's deception disguised as progress, tolerance, or enlightenment. Are you rejecting small truths today that prepare you to accept big lies tomorrow? The Antichrist will offer everything the flesh desires: power without holiness, peace without truth, salvation without a Savior. But he can only succeed where truth has already been abandoned. This is why shallow Christianity is so dangerous. Surface-level faith cannot withstand systematic deception. Root yourself deeply in God's Word now. Know what you believe, why you believe it, and where Scripture confirms it. The answer to deception is truth, and truth requires diligent, daily pursuit.

Read the Context (Further reading: Matthew 24:4-5, 23-25)
2 Thessalonians 2 NIV
1Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. 3Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness a is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
5Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits b to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings c we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
Footnotes:
a 3 Some manuscripts sin
b 13 Some manuscripts because from the beginning God chose you
c 15 Or traditions

Make the Connection

What does this show me about God’s character?

What does God want me to believe or do?

Am I willing to follow God in this way?

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? This detail is easy to miss, but it's profoundly comforting: chaos doesn't precede God's activity—God's activity precedes what looks like chaos. The winds represent His sovereign hand directing all things from every direction. When your life feels stormy, when nations rage, when evil seems to advance unchecked, remember that the winds blow at His command. No king controls them. No army stops them. The same God who stirred the waters in Daniel's vision is actively at work in your circumstances today. You may not see His hand, but it's there—powerful, purposeful, and in complete control. Nothing rises without His permission, and nothing falls outside His plan.

Read the Context (Further reading: Jeremiah 49:36; Psalm 135:6-7)
Daniel 7 NIV
1In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying in bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.
2Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. 3Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.
4“The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it.
5“And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’
6“After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
7“After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
8“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
9“As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels were all ablaze.
10A river of fire was flowing,
coming out from before him.
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
and the books were opened.
11“Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12(The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)
13“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, a coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
15“I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. 16I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: 17‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18But the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’
19“Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully. 21As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them, 22until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.
23“He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time. b
26“ ‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. 27Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’
28“This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”
Footnotes:
a 13 The Aramaic phrase bar enash means human being. The phrase son of man is retained here because of its use in the New Testament as a title of Jesus, probably based largely on this verse.
b 25 Or for a year, two years and half a year

Make the Connection

What does this show me about God’s character?

What does God want me to believe or do?

Am I willing to follow God in this way?

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? The world celebrates empires; God sees their true nature. What looks powerful to us often appears destructive to Him. Today, we live surrounded by systems that demand our allegiance—career success, political ideologies, consumer culture. Ask yourself: What "beasts" have I been admiring that God sees differently? The same God who declared the end from the beginning is still sovereign. He hasn't changed His perspective, and He invites us to see through His eyes. When everyone else panicked, Daniel prayed. When others feared men, Daniel feared God. His public deliverance was the result of years of private surrender. Every believer will face their lions' den—sickness, loss, persecution, uncertainty. The question isn't whether trials will come, but whether your faith has been prepared before they arrive. You cannot expect decades of spiritual neglect to produce instant maturity when crisis strikes. But if you walk with God daily, His presence becomes familiar, His voice recognizable, His promises trustworthy. Then when the lions roar, you won't need to invent faith—you'll rely on the God you've already known. Don't wait for the battle to build your faith. Build it now in prayer, worship, and obedience. Your preparation today determines your perseverance tomorrow. The den is coming. Will you be ready?
Daniel's public miracle in the lions' den was the result of years of private surrender in prayer. How does this truth reshape your understanding of what God is doing in the hidden, mundane moments of your daily walk with Him?

Make it Personal

What does this passage mean to you? Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Devotional
Daniel's enemies couldn't find corruption, negligence, or dishonesty. The only accusation they could bring was his faithfulness to God. His devotion became his "crime." In a culture hostile to truth, your consistency will threaten those living in compromise. When your integrity exposes others' corruption, expect opposition. But here's the beautiful irony: what the world calls your weakness, God calls your strength. What they use to accuse you, God uses to promote you. Daniel didn't defend himself or adjust his convictions to avoid conflict. He understood that a good name before God matters more than approval from men. Persecution often comes not because you're doing something wrong, but because you're doing something right in a world gone wrong. Your faithfulness may cost you comfort, position, or popularity. But remember Solomon's wisdom: a good name is worth more than riches. When your faith becomes your fault in others' eyes, you're in good company with Daniel and every faithful saint.

Make it Personal

Daniel's enemies investigated every area of his life and found nothing except his prayer life (Daniel 6:4-5). If your greatest critic examined your life today, what would they find? What would you want them to find a year from now?

How do you maintain spiritual consistency when circumstances, leadership, or culture around you keep changing or even threatening your faith?

Check the Context: Matthew 5 NIV
1Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them.
He said:
3“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, a and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister b c will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ d is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ e 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
31“It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ f 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
33“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. g
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ h 39But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor i and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Footnotes:
a 21 Exodus 20:13
b 22 The Greek word for brother or sister (adelphos) refers here to a fellow disciple, whether man or woman; also in verse 23.
c 22 Some manuscripts brother or sister without cause
d 22 An Aramaic term of contempt
e 27 Exodus 20:14
f 31 Deut. 24:1
g 37 Or from evil
h 38 Exodus 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21
i 43 Lev. 19:18

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?

Devotional
"As he did aforetime"—four words that reveal Daniel's secret. When the law changed, Daniel didn't. He didn't start praying to make a statement or stop praying out of fear. He simply continued what he'd always done. His consistency prepared him for his crisis. Too many believers try to develop faith during the battle, but Daniel had been building faith for decades. Three times daily, year after year, king after king, empire after empire—his prayer life remained unchanged while everything around him shifted. The real battle wasn't in the lions' den; it was fought every morning, afternoon, and evening when Daniel chose communion over compromise. Small daily disciplines—prayer, Scripture, worship, obedience—seem ordinary, but they produce extraordinary strength when adversity strikes. You won't rise to your intentions in crisis; you'll fall to your level of preparation. What habits are you building today that will sustain you tomorrow?

Make it Personal

Jesus said in Luke 16:10, "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much." What "small" areas of faithfulness might God be asking you to strengthen right now?

Daniel 6:10 says Daniel prayed "as he did aforetime" (as he did before). What daily spiritual habits have you established that prepare you for crisis moments? What habits do you need to establish?

Check the Context: Luke 16 NIV
1Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’
3“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’
5“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
6“ ‘Nine hundred gallons a of olive oil,’ he replied.
“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’
7“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’
“ ‘A thousand bushels b of wheat,’ he replied.
“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’
8“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
10“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
13“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
14The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.
16“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
18“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30“ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
Footnotes:
a 6 Or about 3,000 liters
b 7 Or about 30 tons

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? The phrase "distinguishing himself" describes an ongoing pattern of excellence that couldn't be ignored. His consistency became his testimony. When enemies investigated every aspect of his life, searching desperately for scandal, they found nothing except faithfulness. Imagine if your harshest critics examined your finances, messages, work ethic, and relationships. What would they discover? Daniel's excellence wasn't manufactured for inspection; it was the natural overflow of a life surrendered to God. You cannot fake sustained integrity. True spirituality shows itself in how you work Monday through Saturday, not just how you worship on Sunday. God isn't impressed with filtered versions of ourselves. He's looking for believers whose private lives match their public testimonies. Today, ask yourself: Is my excellence consistent or convenient? Am I faithful in small things when no one's applauding?

Make it Personal

Daniel "distinguished himself" through consistent excellence. How can believers pursue excellence in their work/school/home without it becoming about personal glory or ambition?

"We live in a generation where appearances are carefully crafted... it's possible to have a reputation for spirituality while neglecting a relationship with God." Where are you most tempted to wear a "spiritual filter"—to appear more faithful than you actually are?

Check the Context: Daniel 6 NIV
1It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”
6So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever! 7The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. 8Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 9So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”
13Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”
16So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”
17A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.
19At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”
21Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! 22My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
23The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
24At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.
25Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language in all the earth:
“May you prosper greatly!
26“I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.
“For he is the living God
and he endures forever;
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.
27He rescues and he saves;
he performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”
28So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus a the Persian.
Footnotes:
a 28 Or Darius, that is, the reign of Cyrus

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? Before anyone knew his name, he resolved not to defile himself. Your spiritual legacy isn't built in spectacular moments but in daily choices when nobody's watching. What decisions are you making in private today? Your internet history, thought life, and secret habits reveal your true character more than your Sunday smile. Integrity isn't about performing righteousness publicly; it's about cultivating holiness privately. The filters we wear for others cannot deceive God, who sees every hidden corner of our hearts. Today, examine your private life. Daniel's private obedience became his public strength. What foundation are you building when the doors are closed?

Make it Personal

Daniel made his decision to honor God in Daniel 1:8, decades before the lions' den. When did you make (or when will you make) your foundational decision to follow God regardless of circumstances? What does that look like practically?

What's the difference between private character and public reputation? Why does one matter more than the other?

Are your secret habits preparing you for public trials, or creating hidden weaknesses that will collapse under pressure?

Check the Context: Daniel 1 NIV
1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia a and put in the treasure house of his god.
3Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. b 5The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.
6Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, 10but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your c food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
11Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12“Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
15At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.
17To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
18At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service. 20In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
21And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
Footnotes:
a 2 Hebrew Shinar
b 4 Or Chaldeans
c 10 The Hebrew for your and you in this verse is plural.

Talk to God:

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? This is the tragedy of rejected knowledge. Belshazzar had every opportunity to learn from his father's judgment, yet he repeated the same mistakes. How often do we do the same? We watch families destroyed by sin, churches divided by pride, lives ruined by rebellion—yet still choose similar paths of disobedience. God has spoken through His Word, through faithful witnesses, through past experiences, and through His Spirit. The question isn't whether we've heard Him; it's whether we'll humble ourselves and respond. James 4:17 declares, "To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin." When knowledge is ignored, judgment follows. Today is your opportunity to respond differently than Belshazzar. Don't let pride keep you from repentance. Don't let familiarity with truth breed indifference. Humble your heart before God now.
When knowledge is ignored, judgment follows.

Make it Personal

What warnings have I been failing to listen to?

Is there any area of my life where I know what God desires, but I’ve failed to put it in to practice? What’s holding me back, and how can I deal with that resistance?

Check the Context: James 4 NIV
1What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4You adulterous people, a don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us b ? 6But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.” c
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
11Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister d or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
Boasting About Tomorrow
13Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
Footnotes:
a 4 An allusion to covenant unfaithfulness; see Hosea 3:1.
b 5 Or that the spirit he caused to dwell in us envies intensely; or that the Spirit he caused to dwell in us longs jealously
c 6 Prov. 3:34
d 11 The Greek word for brother or sister (adelphos) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God’s family.

Talk to God

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

Devotional
The church's purpose isn't entertainment—it's equipping warriors for spiritual battle. Too many believers know how to attend church but have never learned to fight spiritually. Christ gave pastors and teachers "to equip the saints for the work of ministry." This means developing prayer lives, building biblical literacy, learning sound doctrine, and training to share faith effectively. A healthy church produces mature believers who can stand firm when trials come. They don't crumble under pressure because they've been prepared, not just made comfortable. Evaluate your spiritual diet: Are you consuming only what makes you comfortable, or are you allowing God's Word to challenge, convict, and transform you? The enemy attacks emotions, marriages, children, minds, and churches. If we ignore spiritual warfare, we leave ourselves defenseless. Today, commit to deeper engagement with Scripture. Move beyond passive listening to active obedience. Let God's Word equip you for the battles ahead.
We gather on Sunday to be prepared for Monday's battles.

Make it Personal

Consider the different aspects of preparation: teaching sound doctrine, calling for repentance, developing prayer lives, building biblical literacy, training believers to share faith, and helping Christians endure suffering faithfully. Which of these do you need most right now?

How can our church function as a "training ground" rather than just a social gathering? What part is God calling you to play in this?

Check the Context: Ephesians 4 NIV
1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8This is why it a says:
“When he ascended on high,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.” b
9(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions c ? 10He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Instructions for Christian Living
17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
20That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26“In your anger do not sin” d : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. 28Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Footnotes:
a 8 Or God
b 8 Psalm 68:18
c 9 Or the depths of the earth
d 26 Psalm 4:4 (see Septuagint)

Talk to God

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction? For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Devotional
While Belshazzar feasted, enemy armies surrounded Babylon. He treated a battlefield like a playground, trusting in walls rather than wisdom. Many Christians make the same mistake today. We've become so comfortable that we've forgotten we're in a war. One of Satan's greatest deceptions isn't convincing the world of his power—it's convincing the church he's irrelevant. Peter warns that our adversary prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. We don't wrestle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of darkness. Sunday worship isn't an escape from reality; it's preparation for Monday's warfare. The enemy waits outside the church doors, ready to whisper doubt after you've heard faith and stir conflict after you've experienced peace. Today, put on the full armor of God. Recognize that your struggles aren't merely circumstantial—they're spiritual. Prepare for battle through prayer, Scripture, and vigilance.
Make it Personal

The sermon mentioned that 59% of self-identified Christians now believe Satan is only a symbol of evil. Why is this dangerous? What do I believe about Satan?

What are some specific ways the enemy attacks after we leave worship or later in the week?

How can we ensure our Sunday worship translates into Monday warfare?

Check the Context:
1 Peter 5 NIV
1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.” a
6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
8Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Greetings
12With the help of Silas, b whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love.
Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
Footnotes:
a 5 Prov. 3:34
b 12 Greek Silvanus, a variant of Silas

Ephesians 6 NIV
1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” a
4Fathers, b do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
5Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
9And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
The Armor of God
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. Belshazzar inherited a kingdom and a testimony, but he squandered both. What spiritual inheritance have you received? Perhaps you watched faithful parents pray, worship, and trust God through trials. Maybe you witnessed the destruction that addiction, anger, or rebellion brought to your family. Either way, there are lessons to learn. The greatest legacy isn't found in bank accounts but in lives that honor God. A godly example outlives wealth and possessions. Today, consider: What are you passing down? Are you repeating cycles that should be broken, or are you building on foundations of faith? Make the declaration, "It stops with me," over any generational patterns of sin. Begin building a legacy of faithfulness that will echo into eternity.
The greatest inheritance we can leave is not wealth but a godly example that points others to Christ.

Make it Personal

What kind of spiritual legacy have you inherited from parents, grandparents, or mentors—positive or negative?

For those with difficult family histories: How can we break negative cycles and say "it stops with me"? Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven.
1 Peter 5:5 NIV
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Devotional
Belshazzar's downfall wasn't ignorance—it was arrogance. He knew his father Nebuchadnezzar's story of humiliation and restoration, yet chose pride over humility. God can work with those who admit they don't know, but must use other means to reach those who refuse correction. Today, examine your heart: Are there areas where you've hardened yourself against God's instruction? Perhaps you've watched others experience consequences of sin, yet find yourself drifting toward similar patterns. The difference between spiritual growth and spiritual death often lies in teachability. Proverbs 9:10 reminds us that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Humble yourself before God today. Ask Him to reveal blind spots and give you a teachable spirit. Don't wait for judgment to learn what grace is trying to teach you now.
God can work with humility but not with pride.

Make it Personal

God can work with someone who admits they do not know. Why is humility such a critical component of spiritual growth?

Is there an area of your life where you've been resisting God's instruction? What makes it hard to remain teachable?

Check the Context: Daniel 5 NIV
1King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and drank wine with them. 2While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father a had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. 3So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.
5Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking.
7The king summoned the enchanters, astrologers b and diviners. Then he said to these wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
8Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant. 9So King Belshazzar became even more terrified and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.
10The queen, c hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!” she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale! 11There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom like that of the gods. Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners. 12He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar, was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems. Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.”
13So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah? 14I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom. 15The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it. 16Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems. If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
17Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.
18“Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor. 19Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. 20But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. 21He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.
22“But you, Belshazzar, his son, d have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this. 23Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. 24Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25“This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
26“Here is what these words mean:
Mene e : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
27Tekel f : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
28Peres g : Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
29Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
30That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, h was slain, 31and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two. i
Footnotes:
a 2 Or ancestor; or predecessor; also in verses 11, 13 and 18
b 7 Or Chaldeans; also in verse 11
c 10 Or queen mother
d 22 Or descendant; or successor
e 26 Mene can mean numbered or mina (a unit of money).
f 27 Tekel can mean weighed or shekel.
g 28 Peres (the singular of Parsin) can mean divided or Persia or a half mina or a half shekel.
h 30 Or Chaldeans
i 31 In Aramaic texts this verse (5:31) is numbered 6:1.

Talk to God
The whole point of Scripture study is to get closer to God by getting to know him better and becoming more like him. Prayer is the part of our devotional time where we connect with God, acknowledge and respond to what he has shown us, ask him for further help or direction, and participate with him in his work. But sometimes we all struggle to know how to pray. Here are some ideas that may help you express your response to what God has shown you in your Bible reading today.

What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?

What do I want to thank God for?

Do I have any unconfessed sin?

What do I need God’s help with?

What questions do I have?

Do I need direction?
