Psalm 20:6-7

Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
Psalm 20:6-7 NIV

Devotional
God wants to answer our prayers. God delights to give us the desires of our heart. In this passage, the writer also emphasizes that God’s vision for us is sometimes larger than our vision for ourselves. God knows that the enemy engages us all in a spiritual battle, sometimes even without our awareness. His desire is to give us the victory in every spiritual battle we face. He has already won the victory for his children through the powerful resurrection of Jesus Christ.
He also wants to shape our desires to focus on spiritual things. He gives us earthly things, but those are temporary blessings. He has in store countless eternal blessings that he is just waiting to give us! When we focus our prayers on temporary things, we miss out on some of the spiritual work God wants to do in us.

Read the Context
Psalm 20

1 May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.
3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.[b]
4 May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.
5 May we shout for joy over your victory
and lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your requests.
6 Now this I know:
The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
with the victorious power of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.
9 Lord, give victory to the king!
Answer us when we call!

Make it Personal
  • What battles am I facing?
  • Am I trusting in earthly things, or the name of God?
  • Do my prayers focus on temporary needs, or eternal things?

Practical Application
Be intentional each day this week to ask God for something eternal, something related to spiritual victory. Some ideas are:
  • Salvation of a friend
  • Power to overcome a specific temptation
  • Success or advancement of a specific local ministry
  • Revelation of truth in a specific situation
  • Growth of one of the fruits of the Spirit in your life

Talk to God
  • What part of God’s character do I want to praise him for?
  • What do I want to thank God for?
  • Do I have any unconfessed sin?
  • What do I need God’s help with?
  • What questions do I have?
  • Do I need direction? Do I know how God wants me to serve him today?
